Hounsdown School - A Science College

Hounsdown Houses

Our ‘House’ system is in place to help create a community-focused, supportive environment by dividing students into smaller, vertical teams across all year groups. The house system’s primary purpose is to foster camaraderie, boost student well-being, encourage healthy competition through house points, provide mentoring, and offer leadership opportunities.

Our four ‘Houses’ are named after significant New Forest sites:

Beaulieu

The land on which Beaulieu now stands was once a royal hunting lodge and the property of the Crown. In 1204, King John gifted the land to monks of the Cistercian order.

Bolderwood

In the heart of the New Forest, Bolderwood has a rich history dating back to at least 1325, when a royal hunting lodge was established by the Crown.

Knightwood

Is famous for the ‘Knightwood Oak’, known as the "Queen of the Forest," is the New Forest's largest and most famous tree, estimated to be over 500–600 years old.

Rhinefield

Rhinefield is located near Brockenhurst and has been a site of royal hunting lodges since William the Conqueror in 1097, with a formal keeper's lodge established in 1709.

How the system works:

Your child’s tutor group is allocated to one of our four ‘houses’, and every student can earn house points for excellent and outstanding work during lessons and for supporting the whole school community. In addition, each tutor group can earn extra house points in the following ways:

  • House points
At the end of each month, the top 3 tutor groups with the most house points from each year, will earn an extra 10 points for 1st place, 5 points for 2nd and 2 points for 3rd.

  • Attendance
The top 3 tutor groups with the best overall attendance from each year, will earn an extra 10 points for 1st place, 5 for 2nd and 2 for 3rd place.

  • House Events
Throughout the year, each subject will run a house event, where tutor groups can earn an extra 20 points for 1st place, 10 for 2nd, 5 for 3rd and 2 for 4th (students will earn a ‘bonus point’, just for entering any events that are in extra-curricular time).

At the end of the academic year:

At the end of each academic year, all the points from the three sections above are added up and the house with the most points is invited to a special summer event. The table below shows the current leader board.
